THE 44TH CHIN INTERNATIONAL PICNIC

The World in Your Backyard!

TORONTO, June 23 - TNW - The CHIN International Picnic is known throughout the city as a premiere destination for international performances on both Canada Day, and the following weekend, and this year is no exception! On July 1st, 3rd and 4th, the Bandshell Stage will feature performances from artists from China, Pakistan, India, Portugal, and Italy.  With such a wide variety of incredible talent, there is sure to be something for everyone at the 44th CHIN International Picnic!
On Canada Day, the festivities open with Chinese singer/actor, Gallen Lo Ka-leung.  Primarily a Hong Kong based performer and TV actor, Leung's popularity blossomed after the critically acclaimed series Old Time Buddy in 1997 and Secret of the Heart in 1998.

Later on July 1, India's Crowned Prince of Bhangra, Jazzy B, will perform. A returning favourite at this year's 2010 CHIN International Picnic, he has been topping the charts since his 1993 debut album, Gugian da Jorra. Featured from Pakistan, is Ghulam Ali, renowned ghazal singer.
The entertainment continues over the weekend with the Portuguese Festival, featuring Jorge Ferreira, Belito Campos, and David DeMelo .

Recognized as one of the most beloved contemporary Portuguese singers in the world, Jorge Ferreira is known as one of the great composers/authors/performers of popular and traditional Portuguese music. Ferreira's brilliant repertoire consists of over 700 songs and more than 40 records, among which 24 reached Gold, and 14 Platinum.

Belito Campos is the founder and the driving force of the award-winning Tropical Band which, with the Angolan singer Bonga, recorded the famous songs 'Lágrima no Canto do Olho', 'Currumba', and many others. Belito masters the Kizomba style of music, a romantic flow mixed with African rhythm, and one of the most popular genres of dance and music created in Angola.
David DeMelo is the lead vocalist of Banda Internacional, a group consisting of seven musicians from various Azorean islands and Latin countries. DeMelo debuted his solo project, Filho de Portugueses, in 2006 and released a new CD titled Pedacos de Mim in 2008.
On Sunday afternoon, audiences can enjoy The International Folklore Dance Competition, a 32-year tradition at the CHIN Picnic! Featuring dance groups from across Ontario, the competition showcases the many diverse cultural communities, and their love of heritage and commitment to tradition.

Finally, on Saturday and Sunday evening, a variety of Italian performers will take to the stage, including Nek, Mal, Brian Roman and Mark Masri.
With hit albums each year, from 1998 through to 2009, Italian sensation Filippo Neviani (Nek) will be a major draw at this year's picnic.  A talented songwriter with numerous awards to his name, in 2007 he received the prestigious Premio Lunezia Award for Poetry in Music recognizing the most successful and appreciated singer/songwriter. In January 2009 Nek released his newest album Un altra direzione.
One listen to his collection of passionate and heartfelt songs and it is clear that Canadian vocal sensation, Mark Masri, has been blessed with incredible talent. A Juno-nominated artist, Mark recently released his debut album, La Voce.

Lead singer of the popular group The Primitives, Mal has seen his covers of British and American hits each sell over a million copies, including his Italian version of the Bee Gees song I've Got To Get A Message To You. Mal has appeared  in four Sanremo Music Festivals, and represented Italy in the Japanese Song Festival in Tokyo, winning Best Performer for a song he wrote and performed.
After selling out Roy Thomson Hall on his first professional gig in 2005, singer Brian Roman's career has been on an upward climb. Now touring the US and Canada, he recently released his debut album As long As I Have Music, and his music can be heard on radio stations across the country.

With such a diverse group of performers, this year's 44th CHIN International Picnic is The world in your backyard!
